Why
Every pair loses points to the middle ball, and almost none of them lose it because of technique. They lose it because two players hesitated for the same tenth of a second. The default in padel is that the middle ball is taken by whoever has the forehand there, because the forehand covers more space and hits with more control. Agree it in the warm-up, then call it out loud anyway.
What this means at your level
Beginner
Say "mine" or "yours" out loud on every ball you are not certain about. Talking is a skill and it is free.
Intermediate
The forehand rule bends for the smash. If it is a high ball down the middle, whoever can get under it comfortably and hit it in front takes it, forehand or not.
Advanced
Above club level the forehand rule quietly becomes a positional one: the left-side player takes most of the middle, because from there it is their forehand and they are the one facing the court. On a right- and left-handed pair the middle is a forehand for both of you: a real strength, but only if you have agreed in advance who owns it.
