You are 0-4 down. What do you change?

Change one variable and give it two games. Anything else is panic wearing a tactic’s clothes.

You have lost the first four games. Your pair is not playing badly, exactly, but nothing is working. What do you change?

Change one variable and give it two games. Anything else is panic wearing a tactic’s clothes.

Why

Being 0-4 down usually means one specific thing is going wrong: they are lobbing over one of you, or every point starts with a weak return, or you are both losing the net immediately. Pick the one you are most sure about, change it, and commit for two games. That is long enough to see whether it worked and short enough to change again. Six panicked adjustments in six games is how a bad set becomes a bad match.

What this means at your level

Beginner

The most useful single change at this level: lob more, and higher. It fixes more scorelines than any new shot will.

Intermediate

Talk between points in one sentence, about what you will do next, never about what just happened.

Advanced

Change the pattern rather than the shot. Serving to a different target, receiving from a step deeper, or attacking the other player is usually worth more than trying to hit better versions of the same losing ball.

Why not slow everything down and lengthen the points?

Not a bad instinct, and not an answer. Slowing down without changing what you are actually doing just gives you more time to lose the same point in.

What should a beginner do here?

How does this change for an advanced player?

Change the pattern rather than the shot. Serving to a different target, receiving from a step deeper, or attacking the other player is usually worth more than trying to hit better versions of the same losing ball.
