The opponent is sprinting to cover the cross-court. Where does the volley go?
Volley behind a moving opponent. Their momentum takes them away from it.
You have a volley above the net. The nearer opponent is already moving fast to cover the cross-court angle. Where do you hit it?
Volley behind a moving opponent. Their momentum takes them away from it.
Why
A player who is moving fast to cover one shot cannot stop and go back for another. When you see the opponent sprinting to cover the cross-court, the volley behind them, into the spot they just vacated, is the shot they cannot reach, and it does not need to be hard. Hitting into the space they are running toward, however well struck, arrives where they are arriving. This is the padel version of wrong-footing, and it works best on a ball you have time to place; a rushed volley goes where the racket is pointing, not where the opponent is not.
What this means at your level
Beginner
If you see an opponent running one way, hit the ball the other way: behind them. Softly is fine.
Intermediate
The wrong-foot volley is placed, not hit. A firm push into the space behind the mover is enough.
Advanced
Good opponents move late for this reason. Against a defender who holds position until you hit, the wrong-foot is not on and the feet volley is.
