You have a routine volley. Hard or deep?
Depth beats power on a padel volley. Pace comes back off the glass; depth does not.
You have a comfortable volley at chest height and both opponents are at the back. Do you hit it hard or hit it deep?
Depth beats power on a padel volley. Pace comes back off the glass; depth does not.
Why
On an open court, power pushes an opponent backwards. On a padel court, the wall is behind them, so a hard ball simply arrives at the glass with energy and bounces back out into a comfortable position. Depth does the opposite: a controlled volley that lands close to their service line and dies before reaching the wall gives them nothing to use, keeps them pinned deep, and gives you time to hold your net position. Hitting softer is genuinely more aggressive here.
What this means at your level
Beginner
Aim for the back third of their court and forget about pace entirely. A deep slow volley is a good volley.
Intermediate
Slice under it so it stays low after the bounce. A low deep ball forces them to hit up, and that is the ball you want back.
Advanced
Mix the depths on purpose: two deep volleys then one at the feet of the player who has started backing up is far harder to read than any single choice.

Deep, low and controlled. Depth beats power on a padel volley. Pace comes back off the glass; depth does not. On an open court, power pushes an opponent backwards. Why not short, to bring them forward?
Bringing two back players forward is doing them a favour. You are trading the position you have for the one they want.
What should a beginner do here?
Aim for the back third of their court and forget about pace entirely. A deep slow volley is a good volley.
How does this change for an advanced player?
Mix the depths on purpose: two deep volleys then one at the feet of the player who has started backing up is far harder to read than any single choice.
