Why
At the start of each set, the receiving pair decides which partner receives on the right and which on the left, and that stays fixed for every receiving game of the set. Only at the start of a new set can they change. It is the same logic as serving order: the rules stop pairs shuffling positions point by point to hide a weakness. It also means the decision about sides is worth making carefully in the warm-up, not on instinct.
What this means at your level
Beginner
Put the right-hander with the stronger forehand on the left side, where most balls come to the forehand from the middle. That is the usual starting point.
Intermediate
If the left-side player is struggling with wide serves into the glass, the fix is deeper receiving position now and a swap next set.
Advanced
A swap between sets against a pair that has found a pattern is a legitimate reset. The server has to rebuild the plan against a different returner.
