You have been dragged across to your partner’s side
Once you have swapped, stay swapped. Position beats preference until the point ends.
A wide ball has pulled you fully across into your partner’s half, and they have covered the space you left. What next?
Once you have swapped, stay swapped. Position beats preference until the point ends.
Why
Pairs lose more points recovering their sides than they ever lose from being on the wrong one. If a wide ball has pulled you across and your partner has filled the gap, the pair is still covering the court, just mirrored. Play it out that way. Crossing back mid-point means two players in motion, a gap between them, and neither set when the ball arrives. Reset your sides on the next dead ball, when it costs nothing at all.
What this means at your level
Beginner
The rule is simple: if your partner has covered for you, do not undo it. Play the point from where you are.
Intermediate
Say "stay" out loud as you recover, so your partner knows the swap is deliberate and does not try to hand the side back.
Advanced
Playing your weaker wing for a few balls is usually cheaper than the transition. The exception is a left-and-right-handed pair sharing a forehand middle, where getting back is worth one safe high ball to buy the time.

Why not call your partner back across immediately?
Now you are both moving on a shot that is already in the air, and neither of you is set when the ball arrives.
